Lent begins on Wednesday, and we will then commence our Lenten observance; accompanying our Lord on his path of suffering, crucifixion at Calvary; and glorious resurrection at Easter. I offer this short statement as a guideline for those who may struggle with fasting and abstinence.
The law of abstinence (refraining from meat) binds all Catholics who are fourteen years of age and above. The law of fasting binds all Catholics who are eighteen to sixty years of age. Ash Wednesday and Good Friday are days of abstinence and fasting – ref Canon #1250 – 1253. I hasten to recommend that you speak to your health professional and follow their advice if you have underlying health concerns.
